Hurricane Preparation 2006: Very Active Season Forecast

HurricaneYesterday, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) announced their forecast for a very active hurricane season. The Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and stretches all the way to November 30. On average, the Atlantic hurricane season produces 11 named storms, with six becoming hurricanes, including two major hurricanes. In 2005, the season included 28 storms, including 15 hurricanes — seven were considered major, with four striking the United States.

NOAA's 2006 Atlantic hurricane season predictions are as follows:

  • 13 to 16 named storms
  • 8 to 10 hurricanes
  • 4 to 6 "major" hurricanes — Category 3 or higher
