511: Help for Florida Travelers
During the Labor Day holiday weekend, AAA projects a slight decrease in the number of Americans traveling 50 miles or more from home. "While travel numbers may decrease slightly, we still expect to see substantial traffic on the Interstate system and major arterial highways. That's why we encourage drivers to take the time now to ensure that their vehicle is in excellent running condition, plan ahead, bring directions and allow plenty of time," said Gregg Laskoski, Managing Director, Public & Government Relations for AAA Auto Club South. In Florida, the Florida Department of Transportation encourages travelers to visit www.FL511.com to create personalized travel routes to and from their final Florida destination. The My Florida 511 service allows users to create custom-named trips, such as "Beach" and "Home." The 511 system uses simple Caller ID technology to recognize the caller and provides the option to hear traffic details for the programmed trips first. With just one voice prompt, callers can get information on their entire route. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section of the FL511.com Web site provides detailed instructions and useful tips for successfully using the customizable routes feature. For callers without pre-programmed trips, the free 511 Traffic Information Service provides callers with roadway information, including travel times on major interstates, construction, lane closures, accidents and a free connection to airports, seaports and public transportation systems.
