Buying Fireworks?
Are you breaking the law?

Tuesday June 16, 2009
Fireworks tentTents full of fireworks are plentiful across the state despite the fact that many of the fireworks they sell are illegal in Florida. Got sparklers? They're legal, because permitted fireworks do not contain any explosive compounds, do not detonate or explode, are hand-held or ground-based and cannot propel themselves through the air. That means that all the fireworks that give you a real bang for your buck — firecrackers, torpedoes, skyrockets, roman candles, daygo bombs, and any devices containing explosive or flammable compounds are prohibited. It's a law that the public pretty much ignores and the businesses get around through a technical loophole in the law where any farmer can buy fireworks to scare wildlife away from their crops. Let's just say there are a lot more farmers in Florida this time of year.

However, buyer beware, this year some Florida counties are again drawing a line in the sky with a ban against private fireworks. So, if you plan on personally setting off fireworks on July 4th. The "blast" you set off may land you all the way in court. If you'd like an alternative, choose one of Florida's many community or theme park celebrations where you and your family can have a blast! | Florida's 4th of July Celebrations |
