Hemingway Days Set for July 21-26

Wednesday June 24, 2009
Papa Hemingway ContestLike birds flocking south for the winter, they come to Key West every year in July. Who? The Ernest Hemingway look-alikes. Some come to pay homage and some come for an excuse to drink. Most come to compete in the Hemingway Days popular look-alike contest.

Hemingway HouseErnest Hemingway left an enduring legacy in Key West — his zest for life, literary accomplishments and affection for the island he called home throughout the 1930s is well documented and celebrated once a year. This year's celebration will begin on the commemoration of the 110th anniversary of his July 21st birth, and run through July 26. The festivities will include a one-man play exploring the literary legend's life and motivations, a museum exhibit of rare Hemingway memorabilia, a zany "running of the Bulls" and a three-day Marlin tournament to recall Hemingway's devotion to the deep-sea sport. Although Hemingway Days is celebrated once a year, tourists can see into the life of Ernest Hemingway any day of the year at Hemingway House & Museum.
