Camping in Florida: I-4 Exit 55
Continuing our summer series Camping in Florida, this week we're making a stop along I-4 at an exit not far from Disney World where you'll find two campgrounds — Fort Summit KOA and ThemeWorld RV Resort. The close proximity of the exit to Disney World has long been a draw for developers. In the mid-1970s and 1980s two themed parks — Circus World and Boardwalk and Baseball — opened north of Haines City at the southeast corner of the I-4 and Hwy 27 interchange. Neither theme park was successful enough to remain open, with the last park closing in 1990. The location is presently undergoing redevelopment as a residential and shopping complex called Posner Park. Some new restaurants have recently opened as well, including a Cracker Barrel.
One particular note about these two campgrounds. Most likely due to their location in Central Florida and close proximity to Disney World, their rates are fairly high (comparable to staying at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground). David Sweet, About.com Guide to Camping recently asked his readers "When does the cost of spending a night at a campground make you start looking elsewhere to go camping or RVing for a cheaper price?" Frankly, I'm surprised at the results of these polls so far. Perhaps camping in Florida is more expensive than elsewhere, but apparently I'm used to paying more than most. Tent campers, RVers, just how much are you willing to pay? Take the poll.
