Lightning IS a Serious Risk

Monday July 6, 2009
One person was killed Saturday and 18 injured when lightning struck "out of the blue" in Lakeland on Saturday. A group of about 100 parishioners were gathered for a 4th of July holiday celebration, and about 20 young people playing soccer on an open field at the time of the strike. Early reports said there were no storm clouds visible in the immediate area. >News Story

This is a stark reminder of what so many do not know... that not only is Central Florida the Lightning Capital of the U.S., but lightning strikes this time of year in Central Florida more than anywhere else — about 50 times within each square mile. It needs to be taken very seriously.

I've put together a quiz to test your knowledge of this great force of nature. Must a storm be directly overhead to be dangerous? Find out the truth when you take the quiz.
