Charley's Gone
Updated Saturday 7:00 AM

Hurricane Charley is gone and he spared his projected target of Tampa Bay. Instead, he left behind utter devastation in Lee and Charlotte Counties — Fort Myers, Sanibel Island, Punta Gorda and the Charlotte Harbor area are devastated. As reports began to trickle in late last night estimates of damage are starting in the billions of dollars. Dozens of injuries and an unknown number of deaths are attributed to the storm.

Hurricane Charley had intensified into a Category IV storm with sustained winds of 145 mph. His course took him northward across the center of the state which did not have much warning. Central Florida had also been the destination of many evacuees from the Tampa Bay area ironically placing them right in the storms path.

National Hurricane Center forecasters are already watching the tropics and following two more tropical depressions, so now is the time to educate yourself about tropical storms and hurricanes and if you live in the state... make a plan.

What is a hurricane? What is the difference between a "watch" and a "warning?" If one threatens Florida, what should you do? Do you have to evacuate? Where do you go? What do I do with my pets? These questions and more are answered in this no-nonsense hurricane information guide. Be sure to see my special Tropical Storm Newsletter with special links to a hurricane tracking map and evacuation routes.
