Panther
The Florida Panther is a unique relative of the mountain lion or puma found in other states and the state's largest wildcat. Although it once roamed the entire state, it now lives almost entirely in either the Big Cypress Swam or the Everglades regions of South Florida.

With a population estimated at only 50, it is no wonder that the Florida Panther is considered Florida's most highly endangered species. It was placed on the Federal Endangered list in 1973. In 1978, the Florida legislature named the panther to be the state animal.
