Nature's Theme Park
Myakka River State Park

By Dawn Henthorn, About.com

Myakka River flows through 45 square miles of wetlands, prairies, hammocks and pinelands, attracting a myriad of wetland creatures making birding, canoeing, fishing and wildlife observation popular activities.

When you think of team-building activities it is necessary to think out of the box – or perhaps simply out of the cubicle – as did my niece and her co-workers. She works in a fast-paced office for an Internet development and interactive marketing company in the St. Petersburg area. Recently, they took a day off, traveled south to the Sarasota area and put their out-of-the-office skills together at Myakka River State Park.

Their experiences were not much different from those seeking the solitude from hectic lifestyles while on vacation – a little fun, a little relaxing, and a few memories to last until the next respite.

Canoeing is one of the most popular activities at Myakka and they had a great (although a little wet) time. They also took one of the popular airboats for a scenic cruise on the Upper Myakka Lake to discover a variety of creatures and hear intriguing stories about alligators and sandhill cranes. These air-powered vessels can venture into the shallow, grassy areas and the leisurely ride is so smooth you'll have no problem taking great photographs.

The group also explored the treetops on Myakka's canopy walkway taking in an awesome view of the wetlands, forest, and prairie.

Myakka River State Park is one of Florida's largest and oldest, having been developed in 1934. Some of the original buildings are still in use today, including five log rental cabins. Whether you go for the day or stay a week, you'll find many opportunities to discover the uniqueness of Myakka.

Myakka River State Park is located on State Road 72 (9 miles east of I-75) in Sarasota which is approximately 60 miles south of Tampa Bay. Admission to the park is $4 per vehicle (2-8 people) or $2 for one person. Camping is available in one of two family campgrounds that accommodate campers to 35 ft. long. A limited number of camps are also available for primitive campsites, groups, and rental cabins. Camping rates are seasonal and vary according to the type of camping requested. Reservations are taken by phone or in person up to 11 months in advance. Canoe and bicycle rentals are available. Tram and boat tours are seasonal. Summer hours (June 1st - December 15th) are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and weekends 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Winter hours (December 16th - May 31st) are Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and weekends 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Myakka Outpost Concession provides ice, food, drinks, photo supplies, camp supplies, bait & tackle, firewood, and a gift shop for souvenirs. | Photos |
