Dawn sent me three photos from her family's trip to the Everglades in December, 2003. She says, "That trip was so much fun. I can't think of anything we particularly enjoyed more than anything else. If I had to choose, I guess it would have to be the wildlife — the birds and gators." (As evidenced by these photos.)

Thank goodness for zoom lens! You wouldn't dare get as close as this seems to a live alligator. You should never get closer than 30 feet to an alligator — farther than that if it hisses or opens its mouth defensively. Alligators lumber along when they drag their tails, but by using what is called a "high walk" — walking on their toes with their tails high in the air — they can actually run up to 30 miles per hour (38 kph) for short distances... just long enough to grab you.

A very close up view of an alligator in The Everglades!
