Primate World: Mandrill |
| One mandrill grooms
another within their habitat in Primate World at Lowry Park Zoo in Tampa. These primates are one of the most brightly colored mammals in existence characterized by the bright facial coloration, particularly of the adult males. Prominent ridges are located on each side of the nasal bones and there are six grooves in each ridge. The adult male has blue and purple in these grooves and a scarlet nose. The females and young males have less pronounced grooves, no purple coloration and a black nose. The mammals spend most of their time on the ground searching for food, but then move to trees to eat and sleep. In the wild, their troop size varies widely, but occasionally numbers over 100 individuals. |
