Would you pay extra to bypass the long lines at a theme park? That's what Universal Orlando is hoping you will do. In addition to the $85 admission for a one-day, one-park admission, Universal offers a special pass that allows you to skip the regular long lines at many of its attractions for a separate line with a shorter wait time.

It could be an easy sell for two reasons — none of us like standing in long lines; and, if we weren't standing in long lines we likely would be seeing more attractions. That would likely translate into feeling that we're getting more of our money's worth from the price of our regular admission.

Still, there are things to consider. First of all, you still might have to wait... just for a shorter period of time. If you have a favorite attraction, you can't ride it over and over with this pass. You can only use the pass one time at each participating attraction. Then there is the cost. If you stay at one of Universal Orlando's resort hotels, the pass is complimentary. If you are staying elsewhere, Universal's Express Access pass will cost you an additional $19.99 to $69.99 (plus tax) per day, depending on the season and whether you purchase a one-day or multi-day admission ticket. Unlimited Universal Express Access is also available at both parks, starting at $169.99, with Universal's VIP Ticket that includes general park-to-park admission.

The idea of Universal's Express Access Pass is similar to Disney World's FastPass+. You use a special pass to bypass the regular attraction lines for a line that promises a shorter wait time. Neither can promise no waiting, but both provide a separate line that is usually shorter than the regular attraction queue. Both limit the use of their go-to-the-head-of-the-line pass — at Universal Orlando, you may use the pass at any participating attraction... once.

While multi-day tickets can ultimately reduce the amount it costs to enter the theme parks each day, the fact remains that it still costs a family of four several hundred dollars for a theme park visit. Only you can decide if the additional cost of the Express Access Pass is worth the time it will save.
