This craft project is simple enough for children and nice enough to hang on the most elaborate holiday tree. If you were lucky enough to find sand dollars at the beach, you can use them after properly drying and cleaning. If not, most craft stores do carry sand dollars you can purchase.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: One to two hours.
Here's How:
- Properly dry and clean sand dollars from beach or purchase sand dollars at craft store.
- This step is optional. There is a commercial sand dollar hardener that can be brushed on and left to dry that will keep the sand dollar from becoming brittle and breaking. Instead of buying a commercial hardener, you can make your own by mixing one part white glue and one part water.
- If your sand dollar isn't very white, you'll want to start by painting it white all over.
- Next begin to paint your sand dollar Santa with an oval of flesh color for Santa's face and pink for his rosey cheeks.
- Next paint the red cap, around the large hole for Santa's mouth and don't forget a dot for his nose!
- Use black paint or a black permanent marker for his eyes.
- Carefully paint a silver mustache and a few wisps of hair over the cap.
- Make a brush stroke of white above each eye for eye brows.
- Glue on a small white pom-pom for the tip of Santa's hat and wisps of cotton for the edge of his red cap.
- Brushing a little glitter on his beard is optional.
Tips:
- You may want to practice forming Santa's face on a piece of paper before painting on the sand dollar.
- Let each color dry before going on to the next step.
