Big Beach... Big Fun: It's the legacy of car racing that took place along Daytona Beach's hard-packed sand in the early 1900s that helped shape the identity of this unique area. Auto racing, beach driving and Daytona's party-hearty spring break tradition seemed to give the town a reputation that all but ruined it as a family tourist destination. Just as it was toning down spring break, it began courting bikers. Bike Week is now the biggest week on Daytona's calendar. Business is business here.
Family Fun: This is a world-famous beach destination. Besides driving, this beach is great for surfing, walking, jogging, bicycling and volleyball. Although plenty of towering hotels stand along the shoreline, most accommodations are modest and affordable. If your family is into NASCAR or are motorcycle enthusiasts the area is perfect.
Location: Although the beach often claims 23 miles of sand 18 that accept vehicles, that includes Ormond Beach and New Smyrna Beach. Daytona Beach's five miles of beach is accessed between Seabreeze Boulevard and Main Street.
Parking: Free off-beach parking lots or $5.00 per day to park (and drive) on the beach.
Hours: Sunrise to sunset for autos. Open 24 hours a day to pedestrians.
Facilities: Lifeguards, boardwalk, concessions, picnic tables, restrooms and showers.
