Beaches are Florida's calling card, and they have the sand to back it up. One of noted coastal geologist Dr. Stephen Leatherman's, also known as "Dr. Beach", ranking criteria for his list of top beaches is the condition of the sand – color and texture. Florida's beaches consistently rank high on his list, and great sand is a contributing factor.

Here we take a look at some of Florida's sand-sational beaches...

Cape Florida State Recreation Area is a little over a mile of wide, sandy beachfront on Key Biscayne in Southeast Florida that offers visitors exceptional Atlantic swimming year-round.

Florida's Beach. The St. Petersburg/Clearwater area is famous for its 35 miles of powder-white barrier island beaches on the Gulf of Mexico known as "Florida's Beach." From undeveloped, isolated island hideaways to wide, soft city beaches that offer all the amenities a beach-lover could imagine, this area has it all.

Caladesi Island State Park and Fort De Soto Park are consistently rated among the top beaches in the nation by Dr. Beach, but the area features more than 20 barrier islands (also known as "keys") that buffer the Pinellas Peninsula from the Gulf of Mexico – Egmont Key, Shell Key, Long Key, Treasure Island, Sand Key, Clearwater Beach, Honeymoon Island, and Anclote Key.

The longest of these barrier islands – Sand Key – is home home to several beach communities including Madeira Beach, Redington Beach, North Redington Beach, Indian Rocks Beach, and Belleair Beach. A couple of years ago, this area took on a multi-million dollar beach nourishment project that added tons of powder-white sand from the area's shipping channel to several beaches. On the northern tip of the island, Clearwater's Sand Key park is widely considered one of the top beaches in the nation.

Siesta Beach is located on the barrier island of Siesta Key just off Sarasota with eight miles of beautiful beaches. The sand on this beach is 99% quartz for the finest and whitest sand in the world.

Perdido Key is a barrier island in the Florida Panhandle that provides wide, white sand beaches. Sea oats atop the rolling sand dunes make this a natural habitat for shore birds and other coastal animals. A perfect place to relax, fish and enjoy nature.

St. George Island State Park is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico and Apalachicola Bay. These nine miles of undeveloped beaches and dunes provide the perfect natural setting for a wide range of activities including camping, hiking, fishing, swimming and sunbathing.

St. Joseph Peninsula State Park is located on St. Joe Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Known as a popular birding area, it offers a wide variety of recreational activities: boating, saltwater fishing, camping, canoeing and hiking.

So, if it's sand that draws you to the beach, come to Florida for some of the best sand in the world!
