I enjoy camping because it is relaxing, taking me away from the phone and my everyday existence into a quiet world surrounded by nature. Camping gives me a chance to unwind, catch up on reading and just enjoy some peace and quiet. However, I know there are those of you who would be bored by too much solitude. And, many actually prefer to be entertained, at least some of the time. I'm happy to say that there are Florida campgrounds that can offer the best of both worlds. These really unique campgrounds cater to campers who enjoy specific activities and even enjoy being entertained, but you can still find a quiet place to unwind when needed.

Farmer's Opry

Waking up to the sound of a rooster is just the beginning of a unique "country" camping experience in Florida's Panhandle. Camp any weekend and you can also enjoy a country home-cooked dinner and two-hour show at the Farmer's Opry House every Friday and Saturday night. Live entertainment is provided by the Sawmill Band. Special nights that include world-famous country music legends are also a treat.

Farmer's Opry, 8897 Byrom Campbell Rd, Pace (located north of Pensacola). Camping is $23.00* per night or $20.50* for three or more nights. Call 850-994-6000 for camping reservations. Dinner is served at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Show starts at 7:00 p.m. Dinner tickets including show are $21.95* for adults, $10.95* for children ages 6-12 and children under age 5, $3.50*. Tickets for only the show are also available. Order tickets online.

Florida Caverns State Park

Open yourself up to a "hole" new experience as you join one of the most fascinating tours within the Florida's state park system, at the only state park to offer cave tours to the public. Hiking and equestrian trails, biking, boating and fishing are also popular pasttimes.

Florida Caverns State Park, 3345 Caverns Road, Marianna. Camping is $20.00* per night. Phone 850-482-9598 for information. Online reservations at ReserveAmerica.com.

Fort Clinch State Park

Scenic Amelia Island is the location of this state park, and the campground is just over the dunes from the Atlantic Ocean. On the first weekend of each month enjoy the soldier reenactments at Fort Clinch. Also, the park is just a short distance from tourist-friendly, historic Downtown Fernandina Beach, where shopping, restaurants, boat tours, carriage rides and ghost tours are just some of the interesting adventures to be enjoyed.

Fort Clinch State Park, 2601 Atlantic Avenue, Fernandina Beach. Phone 904-277-7274 for information. Reserve campsites online at ReserveAmerica.com.

Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground

Are you looking for a camping experience with "character?" Camp with all the modern amenities, but enjoy camping as only Disney can do it — dinner shows, character sing-a-longs, movies under the stars, hayrides, carriage rides, horseback riding, fireworks and a lighted boat parade are just some of the fun activities available.

Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, Disney World. For more information or to make reservations, contact 407-W-DISNEY, a travel agent or online at disneyworld.com.

Lion Country Safari KOA

For those wanting a "wild" adventure, this is the camping experience for you. Sleep to the sounds of nighttime Africa and awake to the sound of lions roaring. During the day, take a safari through the adjacent Lion Country Safari, 320-acre animal preserve; and, spend the afternoon at its amusement park.

Lion Country Safari KOA, 2003 Lion Country Safari Road, Loxahatchee (located in Southeast Florida). Phone 561-793-9797 for more information or 800-562-9115 for reservations.

Silver River State Park

The silver screen will come alive as you venture through the adjacent Silver Springs, home of the famous glass-bottom boats, where six Tarzan movies and over a 100 episodes of Sea Hunt were filmed. Spend a day at the park and the next day at the adjacent water park — Wild Waters. Camp weekends and tour the pioneer cracker village and the Silver River Museum.

Silver River State Park, 1425 NE 58th Avenue, Ocala. Camping is $24.00* a night. Phone 352-236-7148 for information. Reserve online at ReserveAmerica.com.

Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park

You might be singing "I've Got the Music In Me" after a night or two camping here — scheduled events include nights of karaoke, special concerts with nationally-known entertainers and more. Or, you might just prefer to "horse around" and do some equestrian camping and riding through miles of trails. Also, with nearly one mile of Suwannee River frontage, there are plenty of water activities to enjoy.

Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, 3076 95th Drive, Live Oak (located half way between I-75 and I-10). Daily and weekly rates are available, as well as special Suwannee Getaway Packages. Phone 386-364-1683 for reservations.

Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park

"Way Down Upon the Suwannee River" you'll find a little bit of the South and a lot of history at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. Daily carillon concerts can be heard from your campsite and it along with the museum is open daily. The river is just a short distance from the campground providing numerous water adventures.
