The New York Yankees were one of the American League's eight charter franchises and are presently based in the borough of the Bronx in New York City. The team was founded in Baltimore, Maryland in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles and moved to New York City in 1903, becoming first known as the New York Highlanders before they were officially named the New York Yankees. By 2010, the franchise held the most titles in the League, with 27 World Series championships and 40 American League pennants.

The team's owner of 37 years, George M. Steinbrenner earned the nickname "The Boss" because of his hands-on approach to team ownership. It is a little known fact that Steinbrenner had a fondness for horse racing and was also the boss of another operation — he owned the 850-acre Kinsman Stud Farm in Ocala, Florida. In fact, he owned the farm longer than he owned the New York Yankees; and, while the farm was always a refuge for him, it was also a serious business. Steinbrenner's farm has bred and raced some stakes winners and had six entries into America's most famous horse race — the Kentucky Derby.

Steinbrenner spent the last few years at his home in Tampa, until his death July 13, 2010. He died of a heart attack at Tampa's St. Joseph's Hospital just 9 days after his 80th birthday. Ironically, eight days before that of former Yankee manager Ralph Houk. In George M. Steinbrenner, America not only lost an iconic sports figure, but a great philanthropist.
