It is estimated that 42% of Florida's residents take at least one vacation a year in their home state. Undoubtedly many of these vacations are to the same popular attractions those from out-of-state visit -- Disney World, SeaWorld Orlando and Universal Studios. Still many more are probably to little-known destinations that never turn up on the typical tourist itinerary.
One such destination is the Stephen C. Foster memorial at White Springs. Located in North Central Florida along the Suwannee River, it honors one of America's best-loved musical storytellers. Foster wrote Suwannee River (also known as Old Folks At Home) in 1851. The Stephen Foster State Folk Culture Center features dioramas depicting scenes described in some of Foster's most famous songs as well as rare pianos and musical instruments. As a gathering place for those who perpetuate the crafts, music and legends of early and contemporary Floridians, the Center features a Carillon Tower which houses the world's largest tubular bell instrument. Guided tours are given daily.
You can also enjoy the natural beauty of "Old Florida" aboard a riverboat for an eco-tour of Florida's chain of lakes. The Yesteryear Cruise is for true romantics who wish to experience a relaxing morning or afternoon in the warm tropical climate of Florida. Although each cruise varies, stops can include shopping in quaint Mt. Dora for antiques or a visit to the Lakeridge Winery-. Cruises originate in the Central Florida area and include breakfast or lunch with venues changing with the weather.
Listed among USA Today's 1999 Travel Guide "10 Great Places to Pull Over", Weeki Wachee Springs was called "the last surviving mermaid attraction in the country". Having visited there within the last couple of years, I can honestly say it is still well worth the stop. It features swimmers performing in an underwater artisan spring theater. Youngsters and the young at heart will enjoy Buccaneer Bay where you can take a refreshing dip in the cool crystal-clear waters of Weeki Wachee Spring or challenge the exciting flumes and waterslides or simply relax and enjoy the lazy river ride. You'll want to pack a picnic and stay the day.
And, finally, the beauty of South Florida is never more evident than in the winding walkways of Riverwalk which links downtown Fort Lauderdale's attractions, restaurants and shops. Stroll among the palms and lush tropical landscape, dine in some of the finest restaurants and shop in style. Treat yourself!
These are just a few of the hundreds of adventures just waiting to be experienced. Whether you live in Florida or are just planning a visit, join me in the weeks ahead as we explore both the well-known attractions as well as the "best places to pull over" along the way.
