Cannons Stand Ready

Cannons stand in readiness to protect St. Mary's River at Fort Clinch.© 2006 Dawn Henthorn, licenses to About.com, Inc.
The Fort Clinch cannons stand ready to defend the mouth of the St. Mary's River and the natural deep-water port of Fernandina. The port was the eastern link of Florida's only cross-state railroad.

Building materials are organized into piles, just as the Corp of Army Engineers may have left them when construction was halted.

During the tour you are allowed to go atop the walls of the fort where you will be able to closely examine the cannons. This is a great vantage point to see both the St. Mary's River and the Atlantic Ocean.
