Uniform Supply

Union soldier displays supplies issued to new soldiers around 1864.© 2006 Dawn Henthorn, licensed to About.com, Inc.
When duty called in 1864, a Union soldier would be issued a uniform and supplies as laid out on the table. We were told the uniforms came in two sizes — too big and too small. It was interesting to learn that the issued boots of the day were being made to fit right and left feet — before that time they were straight, would fit either foot and not surprisingly were not very comfortable.
