Casitas were built with windows on each side of the room to capture the tropical cross breezes. They also featured high ceilings so that the heat would rise, making the room feel cooler.

The front room of the casitas of Ybor City was primarily used to entertain guests. The room was often furnished with Cuban-made furniture, heated with a wood-burning stove and light was provided by kerosene lanterns.
