Madeira Beach

By Dawn Henthorn, About.com

Mad Beach: Years ago, Madeira Beach became a popular hangout of the young from across the bay in Tampa who nicknamed it "Mad Beach." Obviously, it was a fun place. Then the condos came to roost and the fun became harder to find. Yet the area still held a special charm despite the crowded development and its popularity never waivered. It just that its tourists now are more likely to come from across the ocean or Canadian border than across the bay.
John's Pass Beach, Park and Village: Nearby John's Pass is a favored fishing location. Nearly 500 feet of beachfront is accessed by dune walkovers, but no lifeguards are on duty. John's Pass Village is a collection of specialty shops, a hodge-podge of not-so-cheap souvenir shops, boat and waverunner rentals, fishing tours and restaurants. This is a popular destination of locals and tourists alike. It is situated across the street from the Gulf just north of John's Pass bridge along the intercoastal waterway.
Location: Madeira Beach is accessed at 144th Avenue and gulf Boulevard.
Parking: Metered beach parking is available at $1.00 per hour. John's Pass Village also has metered parking. Due to limited space, considerable patience is required.
Hours: The official hours of the beach is 7:00 a.m. until sunset.
Facilities: No lifeguards are on duty. Facilities are limited to concessions, restrooms and showers.
