The Bayfront Inn in St. Augustine is a mid-priced motel on the bay front located within easy walking distance of the old downtown shops and eateries. It features Spanish-style buildings; and, although far from new, the rooms have been recently refurbished and are quite comfortable.

It is only two blocks from the shops, features free parking and has a small pool overlooking the bay. The complimentary continental breakfast features free coffee, juice and prepackaged muffins. It is not haute cuisine, but the banana nut muffins were tasty.

There are ample chairs outside each room on the balcony for smokers. Rooms with king-sized beds are $10 more than queens.

There is no restaurant, but the Santa Maria Restaurant is just across the street. We found the service and food there excellent. The Santa Maria sits on a pier jutting out into the bay and the window seats feature trap doors where patrons can feed the fish by dropping bread crumbs.

Since St. Augustine is a favorite weekend destination for Floridians, Friday and Saturday night rates are significantly higher than during the rest of the week. If you are on a budget, plan your visit so you miss the weekend rates.
