If you are planning a trip to Disney World, you need to budget for every aspect of your trip, including travel, accommodations, tickets, food, and souvenirs. Souvenirs and mementos of your trip are a fun part of your Disney World vacation budget — but how much money do you need to bring? Thankfully, you cut costs and make your vacation more affordable without sacrificing quality with these great ideas:
- Bring kids souvenirs from home: Big box stores, dollar stores, and even craft stores offer a wide variety of Disney licensed merchandise, and you can pick up a lot of bargains by shopping locally. Look for Disney character t-shirts, toys, and more on the shelves of your local discount store and save. Slip your bargains into your own suitcase, and distribute them throughout your trip.
- Re-use last years souvenirs: If you are a frequent Disney World traveler, you can reuse many of the purchases from prior years. Some of the most fun things to buy are also the easiest to recycle -- just slip some new batteries into that glow-in-the-dark Tinkerbell or Buzz Lightyear, and you will save about $15.00!
- Make it yourself: From princess dresses to t-shirts, you can save a bundle if you make it yourself! Most major sewing pattern companies stock princess gown patterns, some even have official licensed character patterns, so stitch a dress yourself, and save about $70.00. Making your own princess wear will also save you a bundle at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique. Need a tshirt? Buy a plain one from the craft store and embellish it yourself with iron-on transfers and paint.
Tip: You can also make your own personalized Disney autograph book instead of purchasing one in the park.
- Use the Disney Dining Plan: Your dining plan covers some great Disney World snacks, so use a snack credit and pick up a multi pack of lollypops or some Chip'n'Dale pretzels to take home?
- Buy a mug: If you are a Disney resort guest, take advantage of the refillable mugs sold at your resort restaurant. You can use the mug the length of your stay to save on coffee, soft drinks, and more. Take the mug with you when you leave for a useful souvenir of your Disney vacation.
- Look for sale sections: Many of the stores in the theme parks and resorts have sections with clearance merchandise. You may spot the perfect souvenir at substantial savings if you look for "Sale" signs in each shop.
Tip: Check the "wrong" department for great clothing savings. Small women can wear the largest youth sizes, and a little girl that adores pirates or "Cars" will love the selection in the boys department!
